Escape from Crater. Ann Atkinson

As a child in wartime London I was accustomed to bombing and destruction so the noise of the mobs and the smoke from fires on that December morning in 1947 did not frighten me but we had to evacuate our house in Crater which was close to Maidan Square and the scene of the riots. We could not leave Crater via the only road through the Main Pass so we travelled in a convoy of cars through a tunnel to Isthmus and on to Ma’alla where we stayed with Cliff and Nora Darton of Cory Bros. until it was safe to return home. I remember my Father saying that explosives were stored in the tunnel. Over the years I have mentioned this tunnel to other ex Aden residents but they said it was a figment of my childish imagination so I was delighted to find, 61 years later, on another web site that the tunnel does exist and that indeed it was used as an arsenal.
